Plumbing Tips For Earth Day
I know Earth Day this year is unlike any we have experienced before, its a great time to take pause and think, Are you doing all you can to make Planet Earth the best it can be? As plumbers, here at Auger Pros Plumbing, we try to make eco-friendly choices whenever we can. We’d love to share some Plumbing tips today in honor of Earth Day on how to conserve.
UPDATE YOUR FIXTURES
How many fixtures around your home are ENERGY EFFICIENT? You can find energy-efficient fixtures for every room in your home. Many of our clients have updated their toilets with low-flow options; if you are in the market for an upgrade, consider dual flush. This further reduces the amount of water you use with each flush. You can also look at changing out bathroom and kitchen fixtures with more energy-efficient ones. You’ll be happy that you did when you see your monthly utility bill savings.
LEAKY FAUCETS
Did you know that a faucet that drips one drop of water per second can waste more than 3000 gallons of water each year? Let that soak in. I know it is easy to think, Oh, I will get to that later, we have all done it. But that water loss really adds up over time. And it is such an easy, inexpensive plumbing issue to fix.
HOW OLD IS YOUR WATER HEATER?
Water heaters have an average lifespan of 8-12 years. If yours is more than a few years old, chances are it’s not as efficient as it could be. If you are experiencing water heater problems, you should consider updating it to new technology if it’s an older model. How about tankless technology? This would allow you to avoid heating water needlessly and letting it stand in a tank, giving you access to an unlimited supply of hot water. And save you money over the long haul.
WHAT IS THE TEMPERATURE OF YOUR WATER HEATER?
While it might not seem like a huge deal, your water heater is one of the biggest impacts you have in your home. If you set your water heater gauge just 20 degrees below the normal 140 degrees, you can reduce your heating costs and potentially can save several hundred dollars on your utility bill each year.
CHECK OUTSIDE
Homeowners often think of how they can reduce energy costs inside but don’t forget outside. There are many things you can do to reduce water usage outside too. How is your landscaping laid out? Is it conducive to using your sprinklers less by adding in some drought-resistant plants or shrubs? Different parts of your landscape have different requirements in the amount of water needed to survive. You could also convert part of your landscape to a stone garden or xeriscape.
